Ritambhara Sahni of Belly Dance Institute Mumbai in a TV Serial - Alif Laila [Sab TV] - scene 1

of

T.V SERIALS

This was around the time i used to run my institute - Ritambhara Sahni's Institute For The Performing Arts. I also would act in television serials. The above video is of my serial Alif Laila by Sagar Arts Productions. This was a fun experience. I went to shoot for the serial to Baroda and Sagar Arts has a villa there. My gosh, they have a chroma room, an editing room, dubbing room, all set up. They have everything in that villa. Artists live there. They have make up men and cameramen and directors who have permanent jobs and stay at the villa. A beautiful canteen where they serve food all day long.

A place and experience - unforgettable. I was a mad bubbly girl .....i would wear my mythological costume and after shooting my scene when the director would say - 'cut'...i would start doing my Hip-Hop steps and the whole shooting staff and artist would be in splits.  hahahaha....i could just never stop dancing. Yes i would do Hip Hop steps in the middle of my scenes in  front of the whole shooting staff in this exact same costume that i wear in the above video. I did make a lot of people laugh and made many new friends who i am still in touch with. However most of the faces in this serial do not work in serials anymore really including me :).

Ritambhara Sahni in Alif Laila serial

Sagar Arts made so many serials and the shooting of several serials would happen simultaneously at the villa. Acting, getting my make up done and wearing those mythological costumes would make me look so Arabic. Would just want to wear all those costumes and wear a belly dancing belt over it and belly dance. The costumes would multiply my desire to belly dance....all i missed back then in the costumes was the belly dance belt.

In the above video - its a small scene from my serial Alif Laila - aired on Sab Tv. I play the role of Ismatjahaan - a religious girl. I get kidnapped by a witch who is the queen of witches. She then sends me to Zeeshan's house [ the main lead ] by swapping my face with one of her witches who happens to be Zeeshan's wife as her witch could no longer stay in the house. When i get my face back, i come to the house to expose the witch....All my scenes in the serial are about that. The above video is one of the scenes. Will be uploading more scenes from the serial. Count this as ALIF LAILA  - Ritambhara Sahni - scene 1.

I love all aspects of performing arts and i miss acting. I shall act someday again real soon. Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni and Ritambhara Sahni's institute for the performing arts are like my babies which i have to look after at each point and thus had to give up on several other careers that i started like voicing, dubbing, acting, singing.

Today with social media ruling - i shall do something about my desire to act, sing and do mimicry again - Stay Tuned :)

Ritambhara Sahni of Belly Dance Institute Mumbai - in a Television Serial - Thief Of Baghdad [ Zee TV]

I, Ritambhara Sahni have been a dance instructor since 1996 in Mumbai  and i started to teach at a really young age. I was a child of 6 years when i started to dance and perform on stage and work on the radio as well. My mother Shrimati Indu Sahni was the lead announcer at All India radio and all thanks to her i got the opportunity to work on radio as a child artist and perform for many events as well. Today i also run Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni which is the first ever belly dance class in Mumbai. Today i am proud to say that a lot of the belly dance classes in Mumbai are run by my students who have completed my instructors course at my Belly Dance Institute Mumbai.

I was always in love with performing arts , be it singing, dancing, acting, mimicry, voicing...i was just so crazy to explore everything and today i can say that i have had to explore as many aspects of performing arts as i wanted to always but i was always partial to dance as that was what got me naturally more to do each time and i guess every time.

However my love for acting got me to do serials on Television and i acted in a few. I loved facing the camera. I was always told that i look like an Arabian Girl and i still get that compliment and i so love it as it compliments me as a belly dance performing artist. Because of my Arabian look i got to do a lot of mythological serials and my dialogues were usually in Urdu .

I played the role of a Water Fairy in this serial - Thief of Baghdad. My charector name was ' Shahanaaz' It was a serial by Karnik Communications and the executive producer was  - Mr. Sunjoy Wadhwa [now a great friend as well ]. Mr. Sunjoy Wadhwa is well known for his production house called Sphere Origins and is the man behind ' Balika Wadhu' . I am so fortunate to have met such great people during my acting days on the silver screen and have them as friends in my life even as of today .

It was a thrill to be in that beautiful both with the most talented actor - Mr Narendra Jha. He played Ahmed the Theif [ a good hearted thief for that matter ] . He was popularly called the Baghdad Ka Chor back then and he suited the role really well. I had a few words with him on the day of my shoot and discovered him to be a gentleman, infact he was a person i knew just like his role. An amazing actor and a wonderful person. The serial was directed by the talented Director Mr. Vijay Panday.

Wearing the Arabic costumes for the serial even at that time - i would feel like a belly dancer as i was so crazy to learn and explore this dance form. Belly dance was a 'taboo' dance in many countries and was not accepted in India either. I would sure feel like a belly dancer wearing the costumes when getting ready for my shots in the serial but missed wearing the belly dance hip scarf / belly dance belt always. I use to dream of wearing the coins on cloth wrapped around my waist. Belly dance in Mumbai was not appreciated so i would never have found belly dance belts in Mumbai. A belly dance belt / belly dance hip scarf is something i always dreamed to wear.

Frequently Asked Questiona At Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni

Review / Testimonial by a student at Ritambhara Sahni's Belly Dance Institute Mumbai

As someone who is a bit self conscious on the dance floor (my friends do moves called "the Nargis moves' [for those who can't read, my name is Nargis], and let's just say they aren't the smoothest), the intro to Ritambhara Sahni's belly dance  class in Mumbai had sounded like a good idea to me. The belly dance  class was full of other self-proclaimed non-dancers, but most of us at least had some rhythm. This belly dance class in Mumbai class is definitely for the beginners as well as beginner's of the beginners like me...we spent a lot of time learning to right-left-left-right and use our arms as well along with the beautiful moves. I loved it when i entered the doors at belly dance institute Mumbai and i saw beautiful girls and women of all age , shapes and sizes belly dancing in their colourful and glittery belly dance belts at Mumbai's premier and 1st ever belly dance class - belly dance institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni . I remeber i was so crazy about getting my hands on one of the belly dancing belts on day one. Wearing my belly dancing belt added so much magic to motivating me to belly dance all the more. The noise of the belly dance belts can make one contagiously wear her own belly dance belt to start belly dancing. YEs, im crazy about Ritambhara Sahni's belly dance classes in Mumbai is what i really would want to say here in my review. Also Ritambhara Sahani's belly dance institute Mumbai have made me fall in love with my belly dance belt through the love for belly dance. lastly in my testimonial i would like to say  a big "THANK YOU ' to Ritambhara Sahni mam and here team of instructors  and everyone at Belly Dance Institute Mumbai, for making my belly dance classes first experience with belly dancing absolutely enjoyable. Our batch had so much fun that we're still talking about it days later and cant wait to start the next level. Despite us being older and in various sizes and shapes, not once did you make us feel out of place. Ritambhara Mam - your energy and enthusiasm, coupled with your patience and earnestness to help us conquer the moves, really built our confidence. We stand a little taller, smile a little brighter and walk a little sassier because of you.  I love love love the fact that i could come and practice at all your centers - Colaba, Bandra , Khar and Andheri. It helped me rise so much. Ritambhara Sahni's institute is an amazing belly dance institute in Mumbai.

Belly Dance Institute Mumbai By Ritambhara Sahni

Belly Dance Institute Mumbai By Ritambhara Sahni

Here you can find

out 5 various types of belly dance

Dance is a living and evolving art form. It evolves as cultures evolve and as it is adopted by new cultures. Because of this there are many different styles of “belly dance”. The following is a list to help you recognize some of the different styles and where they came from.
·

  • Egyptian Style Oriental Dance

Ritambhara Sahni Belly Dance
Egyptian Style as the title indicates originates in Egypt. The stars of Egyptian dance gained fame by differentiating themselves from their peers, so there is a wide variety of dance that can come under this heading. There are certain elements that seem to give Egyptian dance a consistent feel. Often Egyptians will dance more to the rhythm of a piece than the melody, although there are a few dancers who do dance quite melodically at times. Also Egyptians often carry their energy low in their body, so their dancing seems very grounded, even when they are dancing in rélevé. Floor work (dancing seated or lying on the floor) was made illegal in Egypt for most of the 20th century, so you only see it rarely, usually in a vignette, character dance or candelabrum dance. As with all Oriental dance, Egyptian Oriental is heavily steeped in the folkloric music and dance of Egypt. For example, Saidi rhythms and elements are very common.
Many separate Golden Era Egyptian Style with more modern stylings. Golden Era refers to the stars of Egyptian dance from the 1920-1950s. Some of the most famous names of that time included Samia Gamal, Tahiya Karioka and Naima Akef. Golden Era can be stretched to include the following generation who started their careers at the tail end of the Golden Era: Souhair Zaki, Nagwa Fouad, Fifi Abdo, Mona Said and Aza Sharif reached the height of their popularity between 1960-1980s. Modern Egyptian refers to more current trends in Egyptian Oriental Dance, some of which includes Ballet and Modern dance elements. Big names in modern Egyptian dance are Dina, Tito and Randa Kamal. There are also many non-Egyptians who have adopted Egyptian styling in their own dancing as well as worked and built their reputations in Egypt. A few names worth knowing include Sahra Kent – USA, Yasmin – USA, Leila – USA, Nour – Russia, Asmahan – Argentina, Soraya – Brazil and Orit – Israel. For more online information on Egyptian Oriental Dance I recommend Jalilah’s article “About Raks Sharki” and Yasmin’s biographies of “Egypt’s Belly Dance Superstars”.

  • ·        Tribal Belly Dance

Ritambhara Belly dance

Tribal style belly dance started in the San Francisco area in the 1960s. It was developed by American belly dancers who preferred a more ethnic and folkloric look to their dance and costumes. Originating primarily at local renaissance fairs, street festivals, and informal jam sessions, tribal style is recognized for its unique costuming elements borrowed from ethnic cultures around the world, particularly India, Central Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. It is usually performed by a troupe. This style quickly spread from California to every part of the U.S. and is now performed in many countries around the globe.

  • ·        Goddess or Spiritual Belly Dance

Ritambhara Sahni belly dance institute Mumbai
Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni
There appears to be a strong connection between ancient goddess worshipping cultures and belly dancing (read "The Goddess is Dancing" and "What is Belly dance?"). However, it was in the 1960s and 1970s that the modern Goddess/spiritual Belly dance form took root, mainly in the United States. It is a style that explores and expresses the mind/body/spirit aspects of belly dance movement and music, especially from a perspective of the divine feminine.

  • ·        East Indian / Bollywood Belly Dance

Ritambhara Sahni belly dance institute Mumbai
Belly Dance Institute Mumbai
Bollywood belly dance It is very likely that belly dance was practiced in India many thousands of years ago before it gave way to more modern styles of classical Indian dance. Although traditional belly dance hasn't been considered part of Indian culture for hundreds of years, there are clues that tie belly dance to India in earlier times. The Romani ('Gypsy') people, who are believed to have originated in northern India, have long performed belly dance moves. They started migrating westward out of India over 1500 years ago and took their influence in dance all the way to Europe. There are also strong similarities between many core belly dance techniques and yoga: they both activate the body's energy centers or chakras. And many ancient Indian sculptures depict mythological female figures in classical belly dance poses wearing what we would recognize today as a belly dance hip belt.
Since the twentieth century, belly dance moves are commonly seen in the 'Bollywood' films of India ( 'Bollywood' refers to the Hollywood style movie industry centered in Bombay, India).
Although belly dance is currently not considered native to India, it's likely that at least some of the core belly dance moves and core belly dance concepts may have originated in India millennia ago, and then spread to other parts of the world.

  • ·        American Cabaret

American Belly Dance basically comes in two different styles Cabaret and American Tribal. Cabaret style is the glitzier more flamboyant of the two styles.  We have taken the Egyptian style of the dance and made it our own.  We incorporate the use of the veil during a section of a routine.  Most U.S. dancers do not dance any pure form of the dance, but add other influences such as jazz, ballet, and Spanish and call it American Style Belly dance.
